As women leaders, navigating the complexities of professional spaces often requires us to balance strength with emotional intelligence. We strive to be assertive yet empathetic, decisive yet collaborative. Yet, societal expectations can pressure us to silence our emotions, particularly anger. Suppressing these feelings can hinder our ability to thrive as leaders.
When I started my business journey and began building our founding team, I received some unexpected advice from a trusted colleague: "Don't be like those bitchy women bosses." This comment struck a nerve. It made me realize the tightrope we walk as women – too emotional one moment, too bossy the next. It can feel like we're constantly navigating a minefield of expectations.
Beyond the Double Bind: The Challenges of Leading as a Woman
Women leaders often face a "double bind" in the workplace:
We're pressured to suppress emotions, leading to feelings of inauthenticity and hindering effective communication.
Assertiveness is often misconstrued as "bossiness," eroding our power and influence, leading to negative perceptions and fueling stress and burnout.
Moving Through the Double Bind: The Power of Movement
Our bodies hold onto suppressed emotions, and anger is no exception. Fortunately, movement offers a powerful tool for processing and releasing this pent-up energy:
Physical release: Activities like punching the air, jumping up and down, or shaking your body with vigor can help release physical tension associated with anger and frustration.
Emotional expression: Movement can be a safe and controlled space to non-verbally express and release emotions.
Mind-body connection: By moving our bodies, we can gain a deeper understanding of our emotions and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
Examples of Movement Practices to Release Suppressed Emotions:
Power Posing: Stand tall, with your feet shoulder-width apart, raise your arms in the air, and hold for a few deep breaths. This pose can boost confidence and reduce stress hormones.
Shadow Boxing: Punch, jab, and weave, letting go of tension and frustration with each movement.
Freestyle Dance: Move your body intuitively, allowing yourself to express your emotions through movement without judgment.
Jumping & Shaking: Get your heart rate up and release pent-up energy with this simple yet effective exercise.
Finding Calm Within: The Power of Breathwork
In addition to movement, breathwork provides another powerful tool for women leaders to manage their emotions:
Mindful breathing techniques like diaphragmatic breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and emotional regulation.
Breathwork practices like Box-breathing, Breath holds, Alternate nostril breathing or Nadishodhan Pranayam, Bellows breath or Bhastrika Pranayama etc. can help improve focus, clarity, and decision-making abilities, crucial for effective leadership.
Regular breathwork practice can cultivate self-awareness and emotional intelligence, empowering women leaders to navigate challenging situations with grace and strength.
Leading with Authenticity:
Learning to process emotions healthily is an ongoing journey, and incorporating movement and breathwork into your routine can be a transformative step for women leaders.
Here's your toolkit:
Embrace the full spectrum of emotions: You don't have to hide frustration or anger. Instead, transform negative emotions into fuel for positive change. Use movement to release pent-up energy and channel that fire into driving impactful decisions and actions.
Develop the essential qualities of a strong leader: Hone your assertiveness, cultivate resilience, and deepen your self-awareness. These are not inherent traits, they're muscles you can strengthen with consistent effort.
